Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI)

📈

Energy Efficiency Measurement

A calculated score to measure the overall energy efficiency of a vessel's design.

Retrospective Application

Similar to EEDI, but applied retrospectively to all existing vessels.

🌿

Carbon Intensity Metric

Measured in grams of CO₂ per ton-nautical mile (gCO₂/t.Nm).

📊

Efficiency Indicator

The smaller the EEXI value, the more energy efficient the vessel design.

IMO Requirements

The International Maritime Organization has agreed on amendments to MARPOL that require all vessels above 400 Gross Tonnage to comply with the following:

  • Calculate the EEXI and develop an EEXI technical file for the vessel
  • Have the calculation verified by the Flag Administration or a Recognised Organisation
  • Ensure the Attained EEXI is below the Required EEXI as defined by vessel type and size
  • Have the Energy Efficiency Certificate (IEEC) re-issued

Note: If the vessel's Attained EEXI exceeds the Required EEXI, the vessel will likely require additional technology installation to reduce the Attained EEXI and maintain compliance.

Implementation Timeline

The EEXI calculation must be completed and the technical file approved by the Recognised Organisation by the vessel's first annual, intermediate, or full renewal of the Air Pollution Prevention Certificate after January 1st, 2023.

$10k - $50k

Hull Lubrication

> $250k

Fuel Improvement Devices

$50k - $200k

Advanced Engine Power Limiter

$100k - $200k
